The queue
How does Next decide the order?
Next ranks your open Todoist tasks by priority, deadline, planned date, how long a task has been waiting and its size. Begin at the top and work your way down.
More in the app: Settings › Tasks › How Next sorts tasks.
What are Running, For today, Up next, Snoozed and Later?
Running holds the tasks you started. For today holds the tasks you picked for today (a picked task you started stays in Running). Up next is everything else, in order. Snoozed holds tasks you set aside for a while, and Later holds tasks with a Not before day you chose.
How does For today work?
Choose Today on a task to pick it for today: a waiting task moves to For today, above Up next; a Running task stays in Running. A pick is only a plan — nothing changes in Todoist. On a new day, unfinished picks come back as a short review: keep them for today, or take them off today.
What is size?
An estimate of the effort a task needs, from XS (about 15 minutes) to XL (more than 4 hours), stored as a Todoist label (size-xs … size-xl). A larger task with a deadline moves up earlier, so you have time to start it. Next adds any missing size labels to your Todoist account.
More in the app: Settings › Tasks › Task sizes.
Can I see the introduction again?
Yes: Settings › Tasks › How Next works shows it again. On the Mac it is also in the Help menu.
Working with tasks
How do I add or edit a task? (iPhone only)
Tap the + button at the bottom of the list. Tap a task to edit its title, notes, priority, dates, project and size. Changes go to Todoist, except Not before, which is Next's own date.
How do I add or edit a task? (Mac only)
Choose File › New Task (⌘N), or press ⌥⌘N in any app to add a task without switching to Next (you can change or turn off this shortcut in Settings › Tasks). Select a task and press Return to edit its title, notes, priority, dates, project and size. Changes go to Todoist, except Not before, which is Next's own date.
Which dates can a task have?
Three, and all are optional. You don't need to plan your days: Next orders the list, so work it from the top. Deadline is the day a task must be done by (Todoist has deadlines on its Pro and Business plans); as the day comes closer, Next moves the task up, a larger task earlier. Planned for is Todoist's date. Set it only when a task has to happen on that day: from that day on, the task moves up. Not before is Next's own date, set with Later…: the task stays out of Up next until that day. To have tasks planned for today appear in For today on their own, turn on Add tasks planned for today in Settings › Tasks; Include overdue tasks adds those planned for an earlier day too.
What does Start do?
Start moves a task to Running, so you can see what is in progress. Back to Up next puts it back — or Back to For today or Back to Later when that is where it belongs. Nothing changes in Todoist.
What is the difference between Snooze and Later?
Snooze sets a task aside for a short while: until tomorrow (the default) or for 1, 2, 4, 8 or 24 hours (Settings › Tasks › Snooze for). Later is for a task you cannot start yet: choose a Not before day — this weekend, next week, next month, next quarter or a date — and the task stays away until then. Restore now removes the snooze or the Not before day and brings the task back. If Keep tasks in Later until their planned day is on (Settings › Tasks), a task also waits in Later for its planned day. Todoist never sees a snooze or a Not before day.
What happens when I complete a task?
The task leaves the list, and Next waits 5 seconds before it completes the task in Todoist, so you can still undo it.
What if I quit Next right after completing a task? (Mac only)
Next tries to send it to Todoist before it quits, for up to 3 seconds. If it has not gone by then — offline, for example — the completion stays saved on the Mac and Next picks it up the next time it runs; if Next cannot tell whether Todoist got it, the sync button asks you to check.
How do I hide a task from Next without changing Todoist?
Choose Hide from Next: hold the task on the iPhone, or right-click it on the Mac. The task stays out of Next and its widgets; Todoist is not changed. Settings › Tasks › Hidden tasks lists every hidden task with Unhide.
Offline, widgets and sync
Does Next work offline?
Yes. Next shows the tasks it last loaded. Completions, edits and new tasks are saved on the device and sent to Todoist when the connection is back; the sync button in the toolbar shows what is still waiting or needs a look.
Which widgets are there? (iPhone only)
The Next widget shows your queue in order on the Home Screen. Edit the widget to choose which lists it shows and, from the medium size up, whether it has a + button for a new task. The Lock Screen widget Next Status shows counts only, never a task title. On iOS 18 or later, two Control Center controls open Next or a new task. Widgets show what the app last loaded; tapping one opens Next.
Is there a widget? (Mac only)
Yes. The Next widget shows your queue in order on the desktop or in Notification Center. Edit the widget to choose which lists it shows and, from the medium size up, whether it has a + button for a new task. It shows what the app last loaded; clicking it opens Next.
How do my iPhone and Mac stay in step?
Your tasks always sync through Todoist; each device connects to Todoist on its own. Next's own information — Running, Snooze, Not before, hidden tasks, your For today picks and your saved project groups — stays on each device unless you turn on My iCloud Sync in Settings on both. Both devices need the same Apple Account and Todoist account. No task titles and no Todoist connection are stored in iCloud.
Privacy and your account
What is AI Agent Access? (Mac only)
Next › AI Agent Access… lets Codex or Claude Code on the same Mac use your queue through Next while Next is running. It is off until you choose Read only (read and search the queue) or Read and write (also add, edit, complete and reorder tasks). An AI client cannot delete tasks. The connection stays on your Mac, and the window lists recent AI actions.
What does Next store, and where?
Your Todoist connection is kept in this device's Keychain. Next reads your tasks and projects from Todoist and changes a task only when you ask. Next's own information stays on your device, or in your iCloud account with My iCloud Sync. Next has no analytics and sends nothing to its developer.
How do I disconnect Todoist?
Choose Disconnect in Settings. It removes the connection from this device only. Next's own information for the account (Running, Snooze, Not before, hidden tasks, For today, saved project groups — also in iCloud with My iCloud Sync), its AI Agent Access level and any changes still waiting for Todoist stay saved and return when you connect the account again. To revoke Next's access for good, use Todoist › Settings › Integrations.
Is Next made by Todoist?
No. Next is an independent companion app for Todoist. Not created by, affiliated with, or supported by Todoist. You need a Todoist account to use it.
